今年的情人节与学生们过得特别温馨，他们在课堂中分享了自家製的朱古力、糖果、蛋糕；但不是很多学生了解"Happy Valentine's Day"背后的意义。

　　话说在古罗马帝国的时候，Emperor Claudius参与许多血腥及不获支持的军事行动，这个皇帝非常残忍，他知道军人不想离开他们的爱人或家庭，无心恋战，所以他取消了当时在罗马所有的婚姻。那时一位叫Valentine的神父为保护罗马人的爱，偷偷地为情侣举办结婚仪式，最后该神父被监禁并在公元270年2月14日逝世。后人为了表扬他，遂把2月14日定为情人节，宣扬爱的重要性。

　　我认为不一定要成双成对才可以庆祝情人节，若心中有爱，每一天也是情人节。我鼓励学生从多角度思考，例如，不是每一个人也憧憬结婚、买房子、生孩子的生活。"The social attitudes of stereotyping life about staying with a person for the rest of your life, falling into the routine of buying a flat and having children may not appeal to everyone."

　　其中一位具创意的学生提议就anti-Valentine's Day的单身人士发起Happy Independence Day，即“单身独立日”，我特别喜欢这位学生对於这个话题的写作，在这裏把其中一小段跟各位分享。

　　"Perhaps I am too young to say this but I really hope I can celebrate the Valentine's Day by demonstrating my independence over romance. I witness the frustration of my mother and other senior female relatives when they lost independence. To me, independence is the key to happiness."

　　喜欢学生用frustration一字描绘女性缺乏自主时候的挫败感，抽象的挫败感不是能用笔墨轻易地描绘出来。

　　我认为最重要的是希望大家广泛地接受现代中国女性有足够能力选择自己的生活态度。我们不需要活在别人眼中的社会模式，也希望社会对单身女性的态度有所改变，选择自主独立的女生不需要为她们的决定觉得尴尬或要为别人解释。

　　"Happiness should not depend on any external conditions and factors. It shall be governed by our mental attitude."
