本栏曾经提及怎样提升阅读兴趣及一些基本英语阅读技巧（scanning and skimming) ，也感谢读者个别发来电邮，谘询有关更加深入的阅读技巧。

　　让我们很快重温一次这两种速读技巧：scanning and skimming。

　　Scanning指在阅读一篇文章中寻找一些特定的词彙、主题、了解整体意思等等。

　　我们可以针对这些内容：

　　○headings and subheadings;

　　○graphics, photos, pictures and artwork;

　　○proper nouns, adjectives, adverbs, active/action verbs;

　　○Figures/numbers.

　　Scanning最大的用途是帮助我们决定是否继续仔细阅读全文，及寻找一些对我们有用的相关资料，帮助学习有关题材。

　　Skimming也是速读的一种，但是会比较深入一点。可以选择下面一些阅读重点：

　　○get an indication of the topic and content of the text.

　　○read the first and last paragraphs to get the key points.

　　○Read the first sentence of each paragraph to see where the subject matter of the paragraph will lead.

　　○Read the key points in the summaries.

　　Skimming最大的用途是帮助我们快速地筛选主要需要集中的地方／句子或段落，当然及后有可能需要再重新阅读整篇文章。但透过这个筛选程序，帮助我们深入地了解有关题材。

　　重温了速读技巧后，我们可以深入多一点了解一下香港学生认为最富挑战性的批判性阅读技巧（critical reading）。那怎样可以批判性处理我们的阅读材料？

　　批判性思维是将理性和纪律性思维（reasoned and disciplined thinking）应用於一个主题的过程。较高成绩的学生往往也是批判性的分析的高手。

　　我们需要根据可靠信息来源的逻辑解释来制定合理的论据。这些技能可说是易学难精，但它们会随着不断实践而提高。读者有兴趣可以试试遵循以下三个步骤：

　　1）Analyse how key elements fit together and relate to each other. 

　　2）Compare the similarities and differences between the ideas you are reading about. Do some ideas conflict with or complement each other?

　　就是看看不同的文章是否一些想法相互衝突或互补？

　　3）Put together various sources of information to serve an argument or idea you are constructing. Make logical connections between the different sources that support your ideas. 

　　也就是说：汇集不同的资料，在不同资料来源之间建立逻辑联繫，support your own ideas and thinking。看看是否可以从材料中得出任何推论并应用於功课作业上。
