Genome (noun)

●The complete set of genes or genetic material     present in a cell or organism. (基因组,染色体组)

Examples:  

1.The genomes of mammals include genes that have been duplicated throughout evolutionary history.  

2.The scientists tracked the words in the Iliad the way they would track genes in a genome.

Cook up sth (phrasal verb)

●To invent something using your imagination and sometimes dishonestly; to fabricate.(编造(藉口、谣言…),虚构)

Examples:  

1.She's always cooking up some excuse.  

2.I'd like to find out who cooked up this scheme.

Let sb off (phrasal verb)

●To give someone little or no punishment for something that they did wrong.(放过或从轻处罚犯错者)

Examples:  

1.They let her off lightly because she's only sixteen.

2.I was pulled over for speeding, but I was let off with a warning.

Acquiesce (verb)

● To allow something to happen, even though you do not really agree with it.(默认,默许)

Examples:  

1.Instead, I acquiesced in her authority and I quietly did as I was told.  

2.Reluctantly, he acquiesced to the plans.

Set the world on fire (idiom)

● To do wonderful or exciting things quickly that cause a great or remarkable sensation in the world.((长作贬义用)一鸣惊人)

Examples:  

1.For all his money and education, he's hardly setting the world on fire, is he?  

2.You don't have to set the world on fire. Just do a good job.
